Carrick Camino Route - 2024

Key Event Details & Things to Note:

Date:                  Saturday the 31th of August 2024

Tickets:              Walkers register for the Carrick Camino through www.carrickcamino.ie. Simply enter walker details, emergency contact details etc and pay the registration fee to be emailed your ticket.

Starting times:  There are three departure times for buses leaving x -7am / 8am / 9am.  It is essential that you attend registration 40 minutes before your start time.

BE SURE TO SELECT THE CORRECT TIME IF YOU ARE WALKING WITH FRIENDS, AS WE CANNOT SWITCH PEOPLE BETWEEN BUSES ONCE THEY ARE FULL.

Time to complete:  The walk will take between 7 and 10 hours, depending on your speed.
In the interests of safety all walkers must reach the three refreshment stops (12.5km, 20.5km and 28km) before the sweep-up leaders in each group. Walkers unable to achieve this very modest pace must accept a lift to the next food stop or exit the walk and proceed at their own risk.

Ticket Cost:  Tickets cost €60 (including booking fee). This includes bus transfer, light refreshments en route, Hot meal on return to The Market Yard and a commemorative Carrick Camino t-shirt and Completion Medal for every walker.

Refunds: Ticket fees are non-refundable except in the case of the event not going ahead.

How difficult? This is important,  Carrick Camino is physically demanding & you should only attempt it if you have regular experience of walking 10km without stopping. Do not register if you have an injury, an underlying medical conditions or have no experience of walking long distances. The walk is not suitable for children under 16 even with adult supervision.

Terrain? The Camino route incorporates tarred roads, gravel paths, boggy hillside, Concrete Footpaths, forest tracks, grassy trails, and stone slabs.  

Guided walk or self-led? The Carrick Camino is self-led. It follows Parts of the Miners way, Leitrim Way and Blueway, The whole route will be Marked out with Carrick Camino Signage.  There will be walk leaders interspersed among the walkers should you require assistance.

If you get injured or can’t continue? There will be a “sweep up” vehicle in operation to collect those who may feel unable to continue and return them to the Market yard. First Aiders will be on duty during the walk to deal with any minor accidents and incidents.

Parking: There are several car parks around Carrick on Shannon, please allow 20 minutes to park your car.

Footwear:  Make sure that whatever you wear is comfortable and well-worn in. Walking socks need to be tight fitting i.e., not loose where they will cause blisters. (its advisable to bring and use a change of socks on the hike)
If the weather and ground is at all dry, we recommend trainers or walking shoes as they are lighter.  

Self care:  
– Sun cream on exposed limbs as you will be out in the open for several hours and skin can burn        even under cloud cover. (a Baseball cap may also be advisable to protect your head)

– Deep Heat or neurophen gel massaged into the legs on the morning of the walk may prevent swelling later on.

– Vaseline on the feet and other sensitive areas around the legs and chest prone to chafing.

Toileting en route?  – Walkers should use the toilets in and around Carrick on Shannon before departing on the bus. Walkers should prepare for toileting outdoors by bringing tissues / baby wipes and nappy bags to “leave no trace” after ourselves.

Food and drink? Walkers should bring their own packed lunch and drink to consume on the trek.  At Arigna Village (12.5km), Acres Lake (20.5km) and Leitrim Village (28km) walkers will be offered complimentary drinks and light refreshments.
A hot meal will be served to walkers in at The Market Yard after the walk.

Can I bring a dog? No. sorry we are just not set up for dogs.

Safety issues? Walkers’ safety is our primary concern in this event and there will be a safety briefing in Carrick on Shannon before departure. Five road crossings will be stewarded, and walkers should exercise great caution in crossing these five busy roads.

Where do we start? The Carrick Camino requires all walkers to register in the Market Yard on the morning of the walk. We must be certain who is on the trail that day, distribute safety briefing, t-shirt, and map etc. We cannot take responsibility for anyone who joins in Ballyfarnon or anywhere else along the route.

Event Instructions to Ensure a Safe & Enjoyable Experience.

  • Please complete your Waiver here. You must print off, read & sign and hand in at registration. It is a mandatory requirement that all participants complete it to take part.
  • Please bring a mask and wear it at the registration, on the buses and any other areas where there is a gathering of people.
  • Hand sanitizers will be provided at all gathering points please use them.
  • Please bring your own water bottle as we will be only offering refills of water at our rest stops for environmental and litter reasons.
  • Your ticket will have an assigned start time either 7am, 8am or 9am. Registration opens at 6am. Please arrive at registration one hour before your start time to allow for parking, registration and avoid crowding, etc
  • Registration Location at your allotted time is in the Market Yard Carrick on Shannon
  • You will receive your registration pack (T-shirt, route maps and Brochure), present your signed waiver & then be bused to the start of the event in Ballyfarnon. Blank copies of the waiver will be available
  • Please use ONLY our designated parking for the event in any of the following locations:
  • Buses will depart St Georges Terrace promptly as enough participants are registered. The first bus will depart to at 6.20am the starting point in Ballyfarnon, and at regular intervals thereafter. The journey by bus is about 20 mins. Buses will have limited capacity as per guidelines, and passengers must wear masks.
  • At your Ballyfarnon drop off point, please commence the walk immediately to avoid congregation of people due to Covid Restrictions.
  • There are 3 rest stops:
    • Arigna Village 12.5km, Acres Lake Drumshanbo 21km and Leitrim Village 27.5km.
  • Roscommon and Leitrim Civil Defence are providing medical and first aid back up the number to call if you are in difficulty is 087 9078854 (add this number to you phone)
  • The Event is 34 Km long and the finish is back in The Market Yard in Carrick on Shannon.
  • Participants will receive a medal and a hot meal in the Market Yard on completion of the event.

 

While on the event

  • There are a number of Public Road sections on the route, these will be marshalled by Carrick Camino Volunteers, please adhere to their instruction and use your own common sense.
  • There are a number of sections where the path is single file.
  • Toilets stop will be provided at registration, Knockranny Woods (5km), Arigna Rest Stop (12.5km), Acres Lake (21km) and Leitrim Village (27.5km)   
  • There are a number of convenience Stores along the route if you need to purchase supplies.
  • Please respect the beautiful environment along the route.
  • Bring all litter home please.
